Ende letzter Woche erreichte ein anonymer Brief viele Teilnehmer und Organisatoren des Historical Kite Workshop.

Aus diesem Grund veröffentlichen wir – Holm Struck und Ralf Maserski - folgende Erklärung.

Raffle - Was ist das?
Die von den Teilnehmern einer Raffle gespendeten Preise werden ausgestellt und jeweils mit einem Losbehälter (Papiertüte, Plastikbecher, etc.) versehen.
Auf jedes mitspielende Los muss der Namen des Mitspielers geschrieben werden. Nun kann jeder seine Lose in die Behälter derjenigen Preise werfen, die er gewinnen möchte. Selbstverständlich können dies auch mehrere Lose pro Behälter sein. Am Ende wird aus jedem Behälter der jeweilige Gewinner gezogen.
Jeder kann durch die Anzahl der eingesetzten Lose seine Gewinnchancen bestimmen. Man kann nur die Preise gewinnen, die einen auch interessieren.

Diese Art von Losverfahren hat einen sehr großen sozialen Aspekt.
Teilnehmer, die über mehr Geld verfügen, können durch hochwertige Spenden, bzw. den Kauf von vielen Losen den Ertrag der Raffle erhöhen. Teilnehmer, die über weniger Geld verfügen, können dies durch selbst hergestellte (z.B. begehrte Drachenmodelle, Einzelstücke) Spenden bewirken. Und auch mit nur wenigen Losen kann man die begehrten Preise gewinnen.
Somit kann sich jeder entsprechend seiner Möglichkeiten am Erfolg einer Raffle beteiligen.

Am Ende jeder Raffle wird die Zahl der verkauften Lose, die daraus resultierenden Einnahmen und die Kosten für die Durchführung (Kauf der Losrollen, Tüten) bekanntgegeben. Die Einnahmen gehen dann, bis auf die zuvor genannten Kosten, 1:1 als Vorfinanzierung an die Organisatoren der nächsten Veranstaltung.

Grundsätzlich werden die Gewinne immer von anderen Teilnehmern (besondere Gäste, erstmalige Teilnehmer, Jugendliche/Kinder, bei besonderen Preisen auch die Spender selber) gezogen.

Die Einnahmen der Raffle tragen seit 2005 in einem nicht unerheblichen Maße dazu bei, die Veranstaltung „Historical Kite Workshop“ stattfinden zu lassen.

Liebe Freunde des Historical Kite Workshop,
es ist soweit!
Wir können Euch jetzt die ersten Infos zum 12. Historical Kite Workshop bekanntgeben.

Der Workshop findet statt vom 20.-22.04.2012.
Ort der Veranstaltung wird das „Gut Ankelohe“ in Bad Bederkesa sein.
Bad Bederkesa liegt zwischen Bremerhaven und Stade.

Neben diversen Vorträgen und der inzwischen schon traditionellen Raffle wird auch im 12. Jahr des Workshops ein Drachen gebaut. Es wird sich hierbei um den beim Workshop 2011 in Apeldoorn vorgestellten und bis dahin unbekannten Adlerdrachen handeln.
Die Kosten für den Workshop betragen 150.-€. Darin enthalten sind 2 Übernachtungen, Vollpension von Freitagnachmittag bis Sonntagmittag (ohne Getränke) sowie natürlich der Drachenbausatz. Wer keinen Drachenbausatz haben möchte, wird auch weniger bezahlen müssen. Da wir aber die exakten Kosten des Bausatzes noch nicht ermitteln konnten, gibt es hierfür auch noch keinen Preis.

Danach erhaltet ihr eine Mail mit weiteren Infos wie Kontodaten usw.
Nach eingegangener Zahlung ist Eure Anmeldung bestätigt.

Wie auch schon beim letzten Workshop haben wir neben einigen fest geplanten Vorträgen auch wieder Raum und Zeit für kurze Beiträge aller Art – die sogenannten „Speakers Corner“ – eingeräumt. Jeder ist also eingeladen, einen kurzen Beitrag, welcher Form auch immer, vorzutragen. Dabei spielt es natürlich keine Rolle, ob es 5 oder 30 Minuten sind, nur eine kurze Info an uns wäre natürlich nett um entsprechend vorbereitet zu sein.

Zu den festen Vorträgen gehört – und da freuen wir uns sehr – ein Beitrag von Daniel Hentschel, einem bekannten Steiff-Experten. Daniel bietet zudem an, eure Steiff-Schätze (also neben Drachen auch Teddys und Spielzeug von Steiff und anderen Plüsch Herstellern) nach bestem Wissen und Gewissen zeitlich einzuordnen.

We’ve got it!
We now can announce the first information’s and facts for the 12th historical kite workshop.

The workshop will be from April 20th to 22th 2012.
The location will be „Gut Ankelohe“ in Bad Bederkesa, a town between Bremerhaven and Stade.

As usual we‘ll present you some lectures, the traditional raffle and of course a kite workshop.
The kite we offer to you in the workshop will be the eagle kite, which was presented at the workshop 2011 in Apeldoorn.
The price for the weekend will be 150.-€, which includes accommodation and meals from Friday afternoon to Sunday (lunchtime) and of course the kite kit. Drinks are not included.
There will be the chance not to buy a kite kit but until today we are not able to calculate the price for the workshop excluding the kite kit.

You can send your registration for the workshop from Oct. 4th to
anmeldung@historical-kite-workshop.de . You’ll then receive a mail with all payment information.
With the booked payment your registration is verified.

As during the last workshops we also want to invite you for the so called „speaker corner“. If you have anything to present to the participants it would be great if you would do this during the weekend.
It doesn’t matter if your presentation is 5 or 30 minutes long – just as you want.
All we need is a short information if you want to present something. That gives us the chance to create a schedule.
One of the main lectures will be from Daniel Hentschel, a well-known Steiff expert. He also offers to evaluate the age of your old Steiff kites, teddy bears and toys as good and serious as possible.

Historical Kite Workshop Apeldoorn 2011 - HKWA 2011

The 11th Historical Kite Workshop will take place in the weekend of May 13th, 14th and 15th of 2011. Again and for the third time we will stay at the “Woldhuis” in Apeldoorn in the middle of the Netherlands. We made an interesting program based upon the common frame of these weekends with a kite workshop, a kite exhibition, and presentations by historical kite expert and time enough to meet old and new friends and spent hours with them talking, eating, drinking, reading and looking at all that interests us so much. Of course the raffle is also part of the program. We have a limitation of 40 participants – the total costs per person is kept as low as possible.

We invite you to subscribe now in the HKWA 2011 !!!

The Program
Presentations can be expected on the subject of man lifting systems and patented kites. We planned to add stories and pictures about many unknown Russian kites and we are working on more. We will let you know in time what we managed finally. The presentations will be part of the backbone of the workshop.

A second - more or less new - part of the program is the ‘speaker’s corner’. Each of the participants is invited to do a 10 minutes presentation. We can plan up to maximum 9 of these short presentations. Tell us about your recent discoveries, an adventure in flying your historical kite, your ‘best’ or most ‘special’ kite, the encounter with an older kiter with great stories and show your pictures to us. Feel free to share your thoughts during 10 minutes. Please send us your idea in the mail with your application.

Regarding the kite-workshop, we have added new challenging elements. Don’t worry; you will go home with a kite. When you do not built during the weekend you still receive kite building material. We like to show you that differences are possible and we need your skills to make our approach a success.

A raffle is always amusing and welcome – the weekend wouldn’t be complete without it. The famous duo Ralf & Holm are hopefully so kind to accept this job.

On Sunday afternoon the workshop will end in the outskirts of the IJssel River near Zutphen. We will fly our kites there and Jan Westerink will demonstrate one of the most spectacular ways of launching a kite.

The location
Our lodging (the Woldhuis) has twice been used by us before and is famous for its catering and the different small scale working places. The cook is prepared and so are we. The details will be communicated to the participators the coming months. The accommodation is for sleeping in groups only. On special - medical - request an individual room is available.

The costs
The costs to participate are € 150 each. This includes 2 breakfasts, 2 lunches, 2 diners and coffee/tea during the days, the sleeping accommodation and the kite workshop surprise material. Partly participation and partly payment are not possible. It’s all or nothing.

Das war er also, der 10. Historical Kite Workshop,
nach einem tollen Wochenende gilt unser Dank wieder einmal den Organisatoren, ihr habt einen grandiosen Job gemacht!
Sehr schnell war dieses Mal die Frage nach dem Nächsten Workshop geklärt, so stellte sich heraus, dass der nächste Workshop wieder einmal in den Niederlanden stattfindet.

Das HKW-Team 2009 hat den Überschuss vom Bad Hersfelder Workshop
von 242,15 € an Ralf Maserski vom Orga-Team 2010 überwiesen und wünscht
dem neuen Team ein gutes Gelingen.

Die Wünsche für 2010 sind verbunden mit der Hoffnung, dass zwischenzeitlich
alle Lecornu-Drachen des Workshops 2009 fertig gebaut wurden und einen
erfolgreichen Jungfernflug hatten.

wir haben nun alle notwendigen Planungen abgeschlossen und geben euch hiermit die noch ausstehenden Informationen.
Anmelden könnt ihr euch ab dem 5. Dezember. Erst dann wird auf dieser Seite eine e-mail-Adresse bekannt gegeben. Damit haben auch Interessenten, die nicht täglich ins Internet schauen, oder erst von anderen auf die Möglichkeit der Anmeldung aufmerksam gemacht werden, die Chance dabei zu sein. we have now completed all the necessary planning and give you herewith the missing information.
You can register from December, 5th.
We will setup a special email-address and announce it here.
This way all interested people have a chance to sign up, even if they don’t look into the internet everyday or only are informed of the possibility to sign up by others.
Please use the prepared PDF-form (one form per person). This makes the organization much easier.
To keep the workshop-costs low, there is no shirt for the participant included. We are planning to offer something special. All interested people will be asked again (please note on the form).
The kite-project of the 19th Historical-Kite-Workshop will be the Antennen-Drachen der Löwe-Radio AG from 1940.

2010 - Der Termin steht fest

An alle Freunde historischer Drachen und der Drachenhistorie,

der „Historical-Kite-Workshop“ findet im nächsten Jahr zum 10.Mal statt und hat damit nun schon selbst eine kleine Historie.
Unser zehntes Zusammentreffen wird von Freitag, 23.April bis Sonntag 25.April 2010 in der Hansestadt Stade, an der Niederelbe, stattfinden.
Da die Organisation und Planung des Drachenprojektes noch nicht vollständig abgeschlossen ist, folgt die Angabe der Kosten für das Workshop-Wochenende spätestens im nächsten Monat. Dann werdet ihr auch die Möglichkeit haben, euch über diese Homepage zum HKW 2010 anzumelden.
Somit bleibt gespannt auf den HKW 2010!

Während wir alle noch schön Zuhause sitzen und die Tage bis Fanö zählen ist Richard Schubert schon längst auf der Insel angekommen und tobt sich am wahrscheinlich leeren Strand aus.
Dabei ist die unten zu sehende Aufnahme entstanden, womit er bei den Jungfernflügen des Workshopdrachens ziemlich weit vorne liegen dürfte - bei den Flügen auf Fanö ja wohl allemal.

Liebe Freunde historischer Drachen,
nach dem erfolgreichen „Historical-Kite-Workshop“ 2009 in Bad Hersfeld ist der Staffelstab weitergegeben worden. Gelandet ist er im norddeutschen Raum. Das heisst, der HKW 2010, der 10. „Historical-Kite-Workshop“, wird irgendwo an der Niederelbe stattfinden (westlich von Hamburg). Veranstaltungsort und Termin werden wir im Spätsommer hier bekannt geben.

So, der 9. Historical Kite Workshop ist seit einiger Zeit vorbei, der Kopf ist wieder sortiert und frei für die Eindrücke und Erlebnisse, die die meisten von uns auf Fanö sammeln werden.

Heute haben Holm Struck und Ralf Maserski den Ertrag der Raffle in Friedrichshafen (515,00€) an Heike und Wolfgang Seitz überwiesen.
Somit ist das Organisationsteam schon jetzt in der Lage die ersten Rechnungen zu begleichen.

Nach einem tollen Wochenende sind auch wir nun wieder Zuhause gelandet.
Ein großes Lob für dieses fantastische Wochenende gilt den Organisatoren, dem Zeppelin Museum und allen die es möglich gemacht haben den Aufstieg über dem Bodensee durchzuführen.

HKW2008 the kite flies!

The Historical Kite Workshop 2008 was in Friedrichshafen. We joined in with people all around the world. Of course the setting in and around the Zeppelinmuseum was great, we all enjoined it. Then we were able to build the Kusnetzov-kite. A beautiful meteorological kite that I wouldn’t be able to build without the work that the organisers of the workshop did. They made a good buildingplan, the iron-work and the pre-bown woodwork. Now the question is…. Will it fly? Well it does! I tried it this afternoon in the meadows around the river IJssel and it flew wonderful. It was a shame that the batteries of my camera got empty, but the one shot that I made, proves my point: it really flew!!
So another compliment to the guys who prepared the workshop: Detlef, Hilmar and Charles. Great work guys, THANKS!!!

Ausstellung in Friedrichshafen

Wie bereits an früherer Stelle erwähnt, findet ab 29. Februar in Frierichshafen die Ausstellung "Vor 100 Jahren - Drachenstation Friedrichshafen" statt.
Die Ausstellung ist eine Kooperation zwischen dem Zeppelin Museum und dem Drachenarchiv.

Inzwischen dürfte es überall bekannt sein, dass der Workshopdrachen in Friedrichshafen ein Kusnetzow-Drachen sein wird.
Ein Drachen mit einer großen Geschichte, vielen meteorologischen Einsätzen und hervorragenden Flugeigenschaften.
Während des Drachenfests in Bebra Iba wurde der Prototyp Probegeflogen. Obwohl es ein bisschen zu wenig Wind hatte wurde sehr schnell klar das der Drachen sehr gut fliegt.
Hier wurde fantastische Arbeit geleistet.
You now all have heard that the workshop kite in Friedrichshafen will be the Kusnetzow kite.
A kite with a great historic story, many meteorological ascents and a very good flight performance.
During the kite festival at Bebra Iba we were able to take part and watch the first flight of the workshop prototype.
Beside the fact that there wasn't enaugh wind, it was good to see that the workshop kite will be a kite with a fantanstic flight performance.

Vom 29. Februar bis zum 13. April 2008 findet im Zeppelinmuseum in Friedrichshafen eine Ausstellung mit dem Thema "100 Jahre Drachenstation Friedrichshafen" statt.

Die Ausstellung wird Präsentiert vom Zeppelinmuseum in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Drachenarchiv.

Wer in dieser Zeit in der Nähe von Friedrichshafen ist sollte sich die Ausstellung nicht entgehen lassen.

From February, 29th to April 13th the exhibition "100 Jahre Drachenstation Friedrichshafen" takes place at the Zeppelinmuseum in Friedrichshafen.

Drachen Foundation Grant

Anlässch des Historical Kite Workshop 2008 lobt die Drachen Foundation wieder eine 500.-€ Unterstützung für eine Drachenrecherche aus.

Wer ein Thema, Drachen, Person o.ä. zum Thema Historische Drachen weiss, das näher und intensiv Erforscht werden soll, der möge sich bitte bei einem Mitglied des in Lindenberg ernannten Komitees melden.

Das Komitee besteht aus Elke Griese, Frits Sauvé und Frank Schulz.

Caused to the Historical Kite Workshop 2008 Drachen Foundation again offers a 500.-€ grant for a kite related research.

So if you know a theme, person, kite or anything about kites that is worth a detailed research feel free to contact a member of the grant-comittee.

So, Fanö ist leider vorbei und der Alltag hat uns wieder.
Das Wetter war in diesem Jahr ziemlich durchwachsen. An den; trotzdem zahlreichen; sonnigen Tagen waren immer wieder Espenlaub Drachen zu sehen.
Auch unser Drachen flog sehr zuverlässig.

Fanoe is over now and everybody has to do his usual job.
We had very changeable weather this year; of course with some days with very fine weather.
If the weather was fine you often could see some Espenlaub kites.
The kite flies absolutely perfect.

So, in zwei Tagen geht es los in Richtung Fanö.
Natürlich ist auch der Espenlaub Drachen im Gepäck um dort Probegeflogen zu werden.
Vielleicht schaffen wir ja eine Art Workshopfliegen mit möglichst vielen (auch Vorgänger) Workshopdrachen.

So, der Workshop 2007 ist gelaufen.
Es war wieder einmal ein tolles Wochenende mit tollen Vorträgen und einem tollen Drachen.
Hervorzuheben ist sicherlich der Besuch von Frau Espenlaub, die aus dem Leben ihres Vaters berichten konnte. Ein wahrlich beeindruckendes und interessantes Erlebnis.
Ihr seit herzlich eingeladen Bilder und/oder Berichte für die Homepage zu schreiben bzw. zu veröffentlichen.
Ein großes Dankeschön gilt natürlich dem Organisationsteam; ihr habt einen super Job gemacht!

Natürlich wird es auch 2008 einen Historical Kite Workshop geben. Alle Neuigkeiten dazu erfahrt ihr auf dieser Seite.

That was the workshop 2007.
Again we had a great weekend with great lectures and a great kite.
One highlight of course was the visit from Mrs. Espenlaub. She presented a great lecture about her father, a really impressive experience.
Now everybody is invited or pleased to write articles or to send pictures from the weekend for the homepage.
A big thank you to the organizers, you made a great job.

Pearson Roller in New Zealand

In February we spend our holidays in New Zealand. We thought that it is a good idea to give one of our Pearson Rollers to Richard and Dalwyne Wotton. Ok, They are a little bit older than 21 years but we thought it was a good idea. So one of the kites from the Historical Kite Workshop has found its place in the sky over New Zealand.
It was a really light breeze and the kite flies perfect.

Im Februar diesen Jahres haben wir unseren Urlaub in Neuseeland verbracht. Wir dachten es sei eine gute Idee einen unserer kleinen Pearson Roller Richard und Dalwyne Wotton zu schenken. Ok, sie sind etwas älter als 21, wir fanden die Idee aber gut.
Auf diese Art und Weise hat einer der Drachen aus dem Historical Kite Workshop seinen Platz am Himmel über Neuseeland gefunden.
Der Drachen flog bei seinem Erstflug bei einer sehr leichten Briese wunderbar.

Pearson Roller News

Frits Sauvé has found a way to optimize the 2m Pearson Roller. Here are his tips:

Kitebuilders of Apeldoorn 2006,

I have changed my red/yellow 2 meter Person Roller just a little bit with very good results.
I have decreased the length of the two top sides left and right of the top sail with 2 cm On each side.

These sides are more tight now, while the rest of the top sail sides are still bellying under pressure of the wind.
This has lead to a more steady flight, a wider wind range and a higher flying angle.
The sides were decreased at the top of the sail. For me it was easy, because I have two different colours and the yellow and the red part is sewn together in the middle. I seperated them apart for about 15 cm and cut off 2 cm at the top deminishing to 0 cm at 15 cm down from the top.
This is later on covered with the edge banding, so hardly visible.
The enclosed pictures shows you the kite as it was in Apeldoorn where the two sides of the top sail were still too loosen.

Als Ergänzung zum Workshop 2006 in Apeldoorn hat die Drachen Foundation einen Brief gemailt, den ihr hier findet.
Außerdem habe ich dazu eine deutsche Version geschrieben, die ihr hier findet. Natürlich gebe ich keine Gewähr für die 100% ige Richtigkeit der Übersetzung.

Dear kiters,

This BLOG is what Frank created for us, to communicate about our common heritage: Historical Kites!
It was the question of some of the participants, to find a place where we can share ideas, stories, plans and new resources. So I am pleased that we can use it now. Never mind the language: we all read German, more or less, French is a little bit more difficult and Dutch can be understood by some Germans. English can be used as our basic.

Now for the news:

Next week we will start sending the DVD-R of the last workshop in Apeldoorn to you all. It has wonderfull material on it.

This DVD-ROM is made for the participants of the Historical Kite Workshop Apeldoorn 2006. We want to give acknowledgement to everybody that deserves it. Making this DVD-ROM we tried to use as much material as we may, because we think it is available in the public domain (internet e.g.) or we received it from the people who did some presentations.
When we were wrong, please know that we do not want to offend anyone.

Now, when you receive the DVD-Rom, please know that we did not make it to be copied around. For personal use we don’t see any problem, but commercial use is not what we like.

Wolfgang Bieck did send us his photo material of the workshop. He included also the pictures of the ‘kite cave’ and the ‘kite-fisherman’ from Sulawesi.

Paul Chapman did send us a lot of beautiful material. We (all) owe him an extra beer on the next workshop for this.

Dick Kortland has a big digital archive on Cody-material that he collected during his long and thorough searches on the internet. We hope that all is really public material. He enclosed some pictures of his visit to Prefailles, also.

Uli Draheim took us along in the world of historical kites with military purposes. I added some material that I found on internet to his presentation (that was great..). Enjoy the little film that he enclosed with his presentation.

Uli Draheim and Antje Präger went to Prefailles and made lots of pictures.

Frank Schultz told us to leave just one picture out (copyrights) and asked us to tell you all that his material is for personal use, not for large scale publication. His presentation on Historical Meteorological Kites in Scandinavia, was great and new for the most of us.

Jan Westerink used a lot of material from the public domain (like internet / patent offices e.g.) and most pictures are made by members of the Westerink-family. His kite-research is a fine example of 'action-research'.

Dominique Cotard did send us some pictures. The Cotards were very pleased to see the intensity that we all had, working on the historical kites. They will organise a workshop in France next year.

Frits Sauvé is the maker of the building plans for the Pearson Roller, also he is the one that thought of the idea of creating a new generation of historical kitefliers. The decision to provide every participant with two kites, came from Frits.

Drachen Foundation provided us with the T-shirts and lots of other materials . We want to thank them for that.

Discussion on the Code of Conduct started in the weeks just before the workshop. The first version has been presented during the workshop by me and will be published in some kite-journals (first: Drachen Journal).

We enjoyed this 6th Historical Kite Workshop and meeting you all in Apeldoorn.
